" Brush your teeth two times a day " is a popular phrase all of us have been hearing since birth. Brushing in the morning is a habit which can't be ignored. But the second brushing at night mostly felt like Skip today. Lets try to make brushing more interesting.
Ayurvedic tooth brushes
Here, in our Ashtanga hridaya, It was mentioned that a good quality, soft tipped herbal brushes of 12 angula, ( which is approximately 9 inches) in length for brushing. Twigs with tastes of Astringent, acrid & bitter taste twigs are used for brushing.
Examples:
- Calotropis gigantea ( Arka)
- Ficus benghalensis ( Nyagrodha) , banyan tree
- Acacia catechu ( Khadhira)
- Pongamia pinnata ( kakubha)
- Terminalia arjuna ( Arjuna)
Herbal tooth powders
Tooth powders like Dhashana kanti churnam and Danta dhavana churnam are readily available to purchase.
Other than these, we can also prepare powders of the above mentioned drugs & can be used for brushing.
Usage of different taste for brushing
Our Sushruta mentioned each drug ineach taste for brushing
- Among tikta rasa- Neem twig
- Kashaya rasa - kadhira
- Madhura rasa- Madhuka
- Katu rasa - Karanja
These are the drugs best for brushing.
Way of brushing
- Up and down / circular motion - 10 times
- Back and forth strokes for both sides - 2minutes
Brushing should be done twice a day. Care should be taken, not to hurt the gums while brushing.

- Helps to eliminate the bad odour

Conclusion
In this modern era, twigs are impossible to use for brushing. To compensate this, a normal tooth brush with above mentioned tastes should be used.
Sweet, salty and sour taste may cause decay of dentures, especially enamel, if used continuously. Only selected sweet taste drugs are prescribed by susruta which was already mentioned above. If possible wooden tooth brushes can be used.
